July 11, 2015 MEETING

Please join us on Saturday, July 11, 2015, when professional genealogist Robert McLaren speaks about using DNA testing to expand our family trees.

Bob has been doing genealogical research for over 30 years. He is the Chairman of the Genealogy Committee for the Clan MacLaren Society of North America. In 2008, the Clan MacLaren Society (based in Scotland) asked him to be their Genealogist and he accepted. He is also the Mid-Atlantic Commissioner for the Clan MacLaren Society of North America. Bob is easily recognized at genealogy conferences since he wears the MacLaren kilt. He is the Project Administrator for the Clan MacLaren Surname DNA Project, one of the largest DNA projects, with 425 participants as of August 2009. He is also the Project Administrator for three smaller surname DNA projects (Lindo, da Silva, and Braham) He presented numerous talks on DNA and genealogy at NGS Annual Conferences, to the DAR, and to other national and local societies. Bob has done research in many areas of the U.S., Canada, and Scotland helping Clan members and clients.

The meeting will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Family History Center at the rear of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Airport Road.

Approved Minutes for May 2015 CVGA Meeting

The May CVGA meeting was held May 9, 2015 in a meeting room in the new LDS church on Airport Road. There were 10 people present.

The April minutes were approved as written.

The current bank balance is $1477.28. This balance includes a $55 donation to The Historic Sandusky Foundation for James Langhorne`s book.. We have changed from First Union Band to the UVA Credit Union.. Someone needs to go to sign the papers.

Susan Emert has held back the program which will be given by the JMRL. She will call to ask them to come after July.

The June program will be a DNA roundtable discussion on DNA, and the July program will be a program given by DNA expert Robert McLaren.

There was a call for a discussion to keep dues at current rate. It is now $15 for individuals, $17.50 for a family, $19.50 for outside the US. It was decided that the ad hoc committee will meet again.

Today`s program was about organizing our genealogy records and resources.

Susan Emert gave an excellent program on organizing our data. She also gave an excellent demonstration of the program Roots Magic. Several good suggestions were also given by members.

In preparation for Bob McLaren’s visit in July, we will get a head start on understanding the terminology of DNA testing and the role of DNA in genealogy with a roundtable discussion.

The meeting of the Central Virginia Genealogical Association will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Family History Center in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church). Directions: The address of the LDS Church is 1275 Timberwood Blvd., on the corner of Airport Road and Timberwood. Coming from U.S. 29, the entrance is on the right (north) side of Airport Road immediately before you reach the church. Drive to the back of the building where you will see the entrance to the Family History Center.
