Andi Cumbo-Floyd will talk about the history of Bremo Plantation located on the James River in Fluvanna County, and her recently released book, “The Slaves Have Names.” Please join us for what will be a very interesting and informative presentation.
The Feb. 8, 2014 meeting of CVGA will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Unfortunately the Family History Center sustained some heavy water damage earlier this week when pipes burst and caused flooding that affected a large area of the church. Thus, the CVGA meeting must be postponed until next Saturday, January 18th. The area will hopefully be available for use by then.
The CVGA will meet Saturday, 11 January at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Airport Road.
- We will be discussing “Holiday Traditions” which we missed when our December meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather.
- Also we will discuss our genealogy research goals for 2014.
- Finally, we will have the election of officers for 2014 which was scheduled for December.
Hope to see everyone there!
ALSO: The Winter edition of the Central Virginia Heritage is at the printing office.
This month, we will have one of our always popular “Open Forums,” where each person can discuss their genealogical research successes and challenges. This time we will focus on our best resource for research. It’s a great time to get to know other members and get some needed guidance.
Guest speaker: Alice Cannon.
“Beyond Boxwood, Bricks and Big Windows: Learning the History of Bleak House in Albemarle County, VA.”
Alice Cannon will share her research, how she got started, the steps she took, and the path of discovering the plantation history and the lives of the people who lived there.
WHEN: Saturday, September 14, 2013 TIME: 1:30p-3:30p
WHERE: Family History Center, 1275 Timberwood Blvd., Charlottesville, VA
Our August 2013 meeting will be a field trip to Richmond. We will have the opportunity to visit the Library of Virginia and the Museum of the Confederacy. Here are the particulars from the email sent out last week:
We need to be at the Library of Virginia for a tour at 9:00 am. Those who wish to car pool need to meet in the parking lot of the Rivanna Ridge Shopping Center closest to Sticks Restaurant. We will leave no later than 7:45 am to arrive at the Library at 9:00 am. The library is free except for parking and the charge for the museum is $15.00. There is no reservation for the museum so members can tour that on their own or with a group at a time they choose. (Note: Unless things have changed, parking is also free in the parking garage beneath the library, if you get your ticket validated while at the library.)
It is not too late to come if you wish. Just meet us in the Rivanna Ridge Shopping Center parking lot near Sticks Restaurant at 7:30 am Saturday or at the library at 9:00 am. If possible, please let me know if you have decided to come.
Meetings of the Central Virginia Genealogical Association are usually held on the second Saturday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Family History Center in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church). Visitors to CVGA meetings are always welcome.
Directions: The address of the LDS Church is 1275 Timberwood Blvd., on the corner of Airport Road and Timberwood. Coming from U.S. 29, the entrance is on the right (north) side of Airport Road immediately before you reach the church. Drive to the back of the building where you will see the entrance to the Family History Center.
