2017 Germanna Foundation Conference and Reunion

Announcing the 60th annual Germanna Foundation Conference and Reunion, Thursday, July 13 through Sunday July 16, 2017. We hope you can come and meet your ‘cousins’ as Germanna is a family of families.

This is the most important Germanna event of the year and this year we are celebrating the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the 1717 Second Germanna Colony.

Rooms have been blocked for Germanna at special rates at the accommodations listed below. If you know that you will be attending, it would be wise to go ahead and book, and be sure to identify yourself for the special Germanna Foundation rate.

NGS To Live Stream Ten Genealogy Lectures During the Family History Conference in May

ARLINGTON, VA, 17 April 2017 —

Reminder: If you are attending the 4-day annual NGS Conference in Raleigh, online conference registration will close on 27 April 2017. Registration by mail must be postmarked by 27 April. Registration in person opens at noon on Tuesday, 9 May at the Raleigh Convention Center.

The National Genealogical Society will live stream ten important genealogy lectures during the May 2017 Family History Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. Five lectures focus on DNA’s role in genealogical research. The other five from the BCG Skillbuilding track will center on building a family researcher’s skills and expertise. These lectures will be among more than 175 offered at the conference, 10−13 May 2017. Details about the live streaming program, plus additional conference recordings, can be found on the PlaybackNGS Website. NGS members and others across the United States and overseas, who are unable to attend the conference in person, are invited to sign up for these live streaming broadcasts.

NGS has selected some of the most popular topics and nationally recognized speakers for the two featured tracks. Registrants for live streaming can sign up for a one day or a two day pass.

  • Track One: Viewers will be able to stream five lectures on “DNA” from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, 11 May 2017. These lectures will demonstrate how DNA has revolutionized genealogy problem solving, clarified contradictions in records, and found female ancestors without a known maiden name. They will also offer advice on the best practices for analyzing autosomal DNA.
  • Track Two: Five “BCG Skillbuilding” lectures by the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) will be live streamed from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 12 May 2017. This set of lectures will teach how to probe documents beyond the obvious, find rich evidence in deeds, use an ancestors’ neighbors, prepare a Genealogical Proof Summary, and build a solid conclusion from disparate evidence.

Registration for live streaming will close at midnight, 10 May 2017, to watch the sessions in real time and as they happen. The Livestream special-value conference pricing will continue to be available for purchase until midnight, 14 May 2017, and will provide video streamed on-demand. After 14 May, the ten video sessions are available to order with the Video Pass package on the Conference Recordings page. All registrants of packages will receive an electronic version of the NGS 2017 Family History Conference Syllabus.

Instructions for viewing the live streaming will be sent to registrants on 9 May 2017.

NGS has selected Playback Now to broadcast the live sessions and to provide the recorded sessions for later viewing. Conference participants can benefit by selecting different presentations while attending the conference and expanding their overall conference experience. They will have three months following the conference to view and repeat the video live streaming sessions (through 13 August 2017), and six months following the conference to stream or download audio files.

Registration goes up by $10 on 4/1/17 to the Virginia Genealogical Conference on 4/22/17 in Richmond.  VGS member is $44 and non member is $55 (prior to 4/1)

Early registration for the NGS Family Hx Conf in Raleigh ends on 3/27.  If you are a NGS member early bird registration is $205 and regular registration (after 3/27) is $240.  Non-member registration is $240 and $275.

November 5, 2016: Charlottesville Family History Conference

The annual Family History Conference will take place at the Church of Latter Day Saints on November 5, 2016. (CVGA will not have a separate meeting on November 12.)

The address of the church is 1275 Timberwood Blvd., Charlottesville, VA. It is located on the corner of Airport Road and Timberwood. Coming from U.S. 29, the entrance is on the right (north) side of Airport Road immediately before you reach the church.

The Fredericksburg Regional Genealogical Society (FRGS) annual Genealogy Conference will be held 24 September 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library Main Branch, 1201 Caroline  St., Fredericksburg, VA 22401. The half-day conference, Gathering Leaves for Your Family Tree, will include six presentations, one-on-one sessions, and sales of books and merchandise.

Family History Conference Coming Soon

Preserve Your Family’s History is the theme of the Family History Conference which will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2015. The location of the conference is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Airport Road. The conference will run from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. Registration will begin at 8:30 am and the keynote address by Katie Derby will begin at 9:00 am.

FAMILY HISTORY CONFERENCE

Mark your calendars! On Saturday, November 7, 2015 the Family History Conference will take place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Airport Road. The conference will run from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. Registration will begin at 8:30 am and the keynote address will begin at 9:00 am.

2014 Joint Fall Conference Presented by the Virginia (VGS) and Augusta County (ACGS) Genealogical Societies

‘History, Records and Migrations’ is the theme of the Fall Conference taking place on October 17 and 18 in Waynesboro, VA (Friday) and Staunton, VA (Saturday).

On Friday from 9 am to 2 pm, staff at the Waynesboro Public Library will be on hand to offer ‘Guided Research’. From 2 pm to 3 pm, Dorothy A. Boyd-Bragg, Ph.D. will present “In the Beginning, Augusta County, Virginia, was [Almost] Everything”.

On Saturday the conference moves to the Holiday Inn Staunton Conference Center. Saturday’s events run from 9 am to 4:30 pm with registration beginning at 8:30 am.

Barbara Vines Little, CG, FNGS, FVGS will present four sessions: “Before It Was Augusta”, “West of the Blue Ridge: Augusta’s Chancery Court Records”, “Frontier Settlement: The Virginia Land Office and Its Records”, and “Migration Trails and Settlement Clusters”.

Nancy Sorrells will speak about “Weaving the Fabric of a New Nation”.

National Genealogical Society Conference Blog

Many of you know that the National Genealogical Society will hold its 2014 Family History Conference in Richmond, May 7-10. NGS has created a blog for conference goers which contains information relating the planning and preparation for the event. You can access the blog at:

In addition to planning, this blog will offer brief descriptions of various archives and libraries located in Virginia, so that visitors to our area can locate and use useful materials while they are here. Earlier entries in the blog noted archives and libraries in Northern Virginia. This coming week, the blog will feature repositories in Central Virginia. I think this information can be useful for us too.
