We will have a business meeting this Saturday followed by a short blog post by Amy Johnson Crow about the WANDER[2] research process.

Our meeting this Saturday will be a presentation by Carol Rush, Let’s Talk About Deeds. Carol will also introduce Nancy Upshaw who will help us understand Deedmapper, a software for working with land records.
A Zoom invitation will be emailed to all members on Thursday. The meeting is scheduled for 10 am on September 12.
Our meeting on August 8 will be about the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment.

GREAT NEWS! WE HAVE A NEW PRESIDENT! Susan Lindsay has volunteered to serve as CVGA president. Thank you, Susan!
In my previous message in the Fall 2019 issue of Central Virginia Heritage, I announced that I will be leaving the position of president at the end of 2019. In that message I also made a plea to the membership for someone to step up and volunteer to serve as the next president. As I write this message in November 2019, no one has yet come forth. Since the office of president must be filled for the association to continue operating, I have agreed to serve as acting president through February 2020, giving us two more months to find a candidate. If no candidate comes forward, CVGA will be faced with the prospect of dissolution. Our bylaws state that the term of office is one year. Please consider serving a one-year term as president of CVGA.

At the CVGA board meeting in January, there was a disussion about changing the time of our monthly meeting. Currently the meetings are held on the second Saturday of the month from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. The proposed change is to have the meetings from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The day of the meeting would stay the same, still on the second Saturday of the month.
One reason for the proposed change is this: the Family History Center in the church is open on Saturday mornings so there is a staff person in the building at that time to open the door for us. This change would eliminate the need for someone to return to the church in the afternoon.

We are being asked if our members support this change, oppose it or have no opinion. “The Virginia Board on Geographic Names recently received a proposal forwarded to us by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to change the name of Negro Run in Shenandoah National Park to Freedom Run. The stream is a two mile long tributary, flowing southeast into the Robinson River, located wholly within Shenandoah National Park, Madison County, Virginia. Its coordinates are 38.5554013, -78.3516712 (Linear Feature Mouth); 38.5794444, -78.3619444 (Linear Feature Source). On behalf of Sandra Treadway, Librarian and Interim State Archivist at the Library of Virginia, I’m writing to ask whether the members of the Central Virginia Genealogical Association support, oppose or have no opinion regarding changing the name of Negro Run to Freedom Run.
If we don’t hear from you by April 15th we will assume that the Central Virginia Genealogical Association has no objection to this name proposal. Please don’t hesitate to distribute this email to other interested parties.
