The Library of Virginia has an extensive collection of digitized newspapers that can be accessed online. However, only some of them are searchable. Learn how you can help make them all searchable by transcribing these valuable records and maybe add some context to your own family history.

The meeting will take place from 1:30 pm-3:30 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The address of the Church is 1275 Timberwood Blvd., Charlottesville, VA. It is located on the corner of Airport Road and Timberwood. Coming from U.S. 29, the entrance is on the right (north) side of Airport Road immediately before you reach the church. Drive to the back of the building where you will see the entrance to the Family History Center.

AUGUST 12 CVGA MEETING

1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

From the summer of 1918 to the spring of 1919 a worldwide epidemic of deadly influenza killed millions. When it arrived in Charlottesville and Albemarle County in September 1918, the community faced a crisis.

Addeane Caelleigh is a historian with special interests in social and cultural aspects of extreme events such as epidemics and natural disasters. She is currently researching the 1918-1919 Influenza Epidemic in central Virginia.  Ms. Caelleigh worked in academic publishing for many years, including serving as editor in chief of Academic Medicine. She recently retired from the faculty of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and is still serving as a visiting scholar.  

There will be a presentation followed by a question/answer session.

Can this photo be improved?

Please join the Central Virginia Genealogical Association for the July 8, 2017 meeting. Read below for meeting details.

Do you have old photos that have faded, turned yellow or become so dark that you can’t discern anyone anymore? Technology might just help to bring those photos back.
At the next meeting of the CVGA Diane Inman will share her experience with improving old photos with computer software. In addition to showing us the tools available to enhance old photos, she has made a great offer to us: send her a photo and she will apply photo fixes and send it back to you with improvements.
Reply to this email with your photo with the subject ‘Old Photo’ and Diane will get back to you. (The time frame will depend on the number of photos she receives.)

May 13 meeting: Field trip to Virginia Historical Society

The monthly meeting on May 13 for CVGA will be a road trip to the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond.  We will be doing a self-guided tour of the Story of Virginia.  This will involve walking for approximately an hour.  VHS also has a library available for research.  A photo id is required to check out material for review. There is no admission charge.

If you would like to come along, contact Patricia Lukas or Linda Gore–you should have already received a private email with phone numbers today. If you have not, please email the Webmaster for a copy of the email. Let us know if you are willing to drive or if you need a ride. Linda Gore has volunteered to drive from the Zion Crossroads location. 

If you are driving in from somewhere other than Albemarle/Charlottesville area, let us know so we can look forward to meeting you there.

We will have two meeting places: the parking lot at Pantops Shopping Center near Food Lion and the parking lot at Zion Crossroads Shopping Center near McDonalds. We will leave from Pantops at 9:00 am and 9:30 am from Zion Crossroads.

The Virginia Historical Society is located at 428 North Boulevard, Richmond, VA. It will take about 1 hour 15 minutes to get there from Charlottesville. The museum is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. We will have lunch on our own. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is next door and they have two good restaurants.

Note: If you plan to use the VHS library, you can prepare by searching the VHS Library catalog from home, so you have an idea which documents you will want to see.

April 8, 2017–Meeting Topic: Using Ancestry Library Edition.

In April we are going to meet at the Jefferson Madison Regional Library, Northside Location on Rio Road, Charlottesville, VA. To register, call 434-973-7893, choose option 4 and advise you are registering for the Genealogy Workshop.  You have to provide your name and a phone number.

NOTE:  This will be advertised to the public by the Library.  Registration is required–the limit is 18 people, so get your calls in quickly.  The CVGA meeting will start at 1:30, but the program will be from 2:00 to 3:30.  There will also be a scanner provided by the library with library personnel on hand to help until 4:00.

If you have documents to scan you will need to bring a thumb drive and the documents to be scanned.

March 11, 2017 Meeting: Behind the Brick Wall: Solving Research Problems with DNA Testing

Many genealogists are disappointed in the outcome when they throw money at testing companies without a concrete goal or question in mind. Successful testing begins with posing questions and then selecting the correct tests and testers to answer those questions. Learn how to set testing goals and how to navigate the testing and analysis processes.

Rachel Unkefer has been a genealogist for more than 30 years and a genetic genealogist for nearly 10 years. She has published several articles in “Avotaynu: The International Review of Jewish Genealogy” and has spoken on genetic genealogy at international genealogical conferences.

Meetings of the Central Virginia Genealogical Association are usually held on the second Saturday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church). Visitors to CVGA meetings are always welcome.
