May 19, 2018 FIELD TRIP TIME UPDATE

Please plan on joining us on a field trip to Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church in Fishersville, Virginia. It is the second oldest Presbyterian congregation in the Shenandoah Valley, founded in 1740. Its historic building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
We will meet at the church at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 19.
Please note the date. It is May 19, the third Saturday of the month. This field trip is in lieu of our regular monthly meeting.
We will spend about an hour at the church and then drive to the library as described below and spend about an hour at the library.

After our visit to the church and the surrounding burial grounds, we will have the opportunity to visit the Genealogy Library of the Augusta County Genealogical Society in Fishersville, just a short drive away from the church.

April 14, 2018: James Madison and the Louisiana 16

Our April 2018 speaker will be Zann Nelson. She will tell us about the 1834 sale of 16 enslaved people of color by former President James Madison of Orange County, Virginia. His cousin, William Taylor, purchased them and subsequently moved them to Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana.

The program will touch lightly on the domestic slave trade while focusing more specifically on the effort by Ms. Nelson to identify the 16, learn more about their lives, and ultimately locate and connect with living descendants.

Covered in the PowerPoint presentation will be the numerous challenges, a few of the tools utilized in tackling the investigation and the status of the project.

Ms. Nelson is a researcher, writer and public speaker, president of History Quest, and a columnist at “Buried Truth” and “Zann’s Place”. She is working on a special project, The African American Descendents’ Quest.

Dec. 16th — Daughters of Zion Cemetery Memorial Dedication

The Preservers of the Daughters of Zion Cemetery will sponsor a “Dedication of the Memorial to the Unknown” in Charlottesville, VA.

This event will take place on Saturday, December 16th, 2017, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the Daughters of Zion Cemetery, Corner of Oak and South  First Streets, Charlottesville, Virginia.

Refreshments will be served at the Tonsler Park Recreation Center located at 500 Cherry Avenue.

Revolutionary War Signing for Payment VouchersDo you have ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War? Now is the perfect time to learn more about them, as Fold3 is giving free access* to our Revolutionary War Collection July 1–15.

Revolutionary War Pensions
The records in this collection include entire pension files for soldiers and sailors who served in the Revolutionary War. Unlike selected records, which were typically chosen subjectively for genealogical content, these records reveal more details about each veteran’s history and service, as well as more information about his family, state of health, and life after the war. Every name mentioned in the pensions has been indexed, not just the soldier’s name, which makes finding people even easier.

Revolutionary War Service Records
These are compiled service records for the regular soldiers of the Continental Army, and for the militia, volunteers, and others who served with them. The records are arranged under the designation “Continental Troops” or a state name, then by organization, and then alphabetically by a soldier’s surname. Records consist of card abstracts of entries relating to each soldier from original records. Also included are regimental lists including muster rolls, pay lists, and caption cards.

Revolutionary War Rolls
The primary function of the many Revolutionary War rolls maintained by the American Army was to provide basic information about the identities, numbers, condition, equipage, and pay status of the men and units that comprised the Army in order to facilitate administrative control. Browse these rolls by state and name of organization (regiment, battalion, guard, company, etc.). Find names of soldiers with the help of annotations supplied by other Fold3 users and feel free to add your own. Thousands of records from 138 rolls of microfilm provide names and details about the men who fought for independence.

Final Payment Vouchers Index for Military Pensions, 1818–1864
Pension payment records are not typically found in pension application files. These cards were created as an index for the final payments made to either the veteran or his widow. They provide additional details on where a family may have moved in the early- to mid-19th century, death dates of veterans, widows, or dependent children, and sometimes the maiden name of a widow.

Can this photo be improved?

Please join the Central Virginia Genealogical Association for the July 8, 2017 meeting. Read below for meeting details.

Do you have old photos that have faded, turned yellow or become so dark that you can’t discern anyone anymore? Technology might just help to bring those photos back.
At the next meeting of the CVGA Diane Inman will share her experience with improving old photos with computer software. In addition to showing us the tools available to enhance old photos, she has made a great offer to us: send her a photo and she will apply photo fixes and send it back to you with improvements.
Reply to this email with your photo with the subject ‘Old Photo’ and Diane will get back to you. (The time frame will depend on the number of photos she receives.)

2017 Germanna Foundation Conference and Reunion

Announcing the 60th annual Germanna Foundation Conference and Reunion, Thursday, July 13 through Sunday July 16, 2017. We hope you can come and meet your ‘cousins’ as Germanna is a family of families.

This is the most important Germanna event of the year and this year we are celebrating the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the 1717 Second Germanna Colony.

Rooms have been blocked for Germanna at special rates at the accommodations listed below. If you know that you will be attending, it would be wise to go ahead and book, and be sure to identify yourself for the special Germanna Foundation rate.
