  1. I have been researching the history of families who lived in Orange Co VA and am stuck on the Cleaveland family. Is there anyone who can help me or guide me on this family.
The person I need help with is Alexander Cleaveland Jr. who lived in Gloucrester Co VA and then later moved into the Blue Run area of Orange Co VA. His name has been mentioned with Lawrence Franklin who had purchased about 400 acres of land and then sold some of it at least 100 acres to Alexander Cleaveland Jr.
Alexander Cleaveland m. Milly/Mildred Presley and had many children which included John Cleaveland b. 1714 and Jane Cleaveland b. ca 1725. She movedinto Wilkes Co NC with other Cleaveland relatives and is said to have married Chesley Joel Coffey. They had a son, Nathan Coffey who served in the Revolution and died in Al in 1823. It’s possible Chesley or Joel Coffey, his father also contributed Patriotic Service.and died in NC about 1789. Jane Cleaveland Coffey is listed in the 1790 census as head of the house and died later that year.
Her marriage record is in NC according to Ancestry. Can anyone help me find the death of Jane Coffey and any of her other children. I also need to establish the place and death date for the father of Alexander Cleaveland, Jr. One record indicates that they both, arrived in VA from England. It’s possible that Alexander Cleaveland, Sr used other parts of his name to distinguish the difference between him and his son. Some think his name is Alexander Roger Cleaveland, who may have died in Orange Co VA. Did the father, Alexander Roger Cleaveland provide any service or activity to the Colony when he moved into the area of Orange Co or Gloucester Co VA? . Is he elgible to be listed as a patriot for Colonial Dames of America?

    • Hello — I would like to post this on our Queries page, so see if anyone in our group knows something about the Cleaveland family. May I include your email address on this post? — Jean Cooper, Editor, Central Virginia Heritage
