CVGA To Participate in Fluvanna’s Old Farm Day, Saturday, May 6

Every year, Fluvanna County holds Old Farm Day as sort of a county fair. This year, CVGA will participate with a table in the pole barn, where we will offer back issues of the Central Virginia Heritage for sale, along with a number of other books and research handouts. Please come out and join us.

Old Farm Day is held at Pleasant Grove Park, and entrance is free for children under twelve, and $5 for all others. Proceeds benefit the Fluvanna Historical Society and the fund to create a permanent Farm Heritage Museum in Pleasant Grove Park. Sorry, no pets allowed on grounds. For more information, check the website above.

NGS To Live Stream Ten Genealogy Lectures During the Family History Conference in May

ARLINGTON, VA, 17 April 2017 —

Reminder: If you are attending the 4-day annual NGS Conference in Raleigh, online conference registration will close on 27 April 2017. Registration by mail must be postmarked by 27 April. Registration in person opens at noon on Tuesday, 9 May at the Raleigh Convention Center.

The National Genealogical Society will live stream ten important genealogy lectures during the May 2017 Family History Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. Five lectures focus on DNA’s role in genealogical research. The other five from the BCG Skillbuilding track will center on building a family researcher’s skills and expertise. These lectures will be among more than 175 offered at the conference, 10−13 May 2017. Details about the live streaming program, plus additional conference recordings, can be found on the PlaybackNGS Website. NGS members and others across the United States and overseas, who are unable to attend the conference in person, are invited to sign up for these live streaming broadcasts.

NGS has selected some of the most popular topics and nationally recognized speakers for the two featured tracks. Registrants for live streaming can sign up for a one day or a two day pass.

  • Track One: Viewers will be able to stream five lectures on “DNA” from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, 11 May 2017. These lectures will demonstrate how DNA has revolutionized genealogy problem solving, clarified contradictions in records, and found female ancestors without a known maiden name. They will also offer advice on the best practices for analyzing autosomal DNA.
  • Track Two: Five “BCG Skillbuilding” lectures by the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) will be live streamed from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 12 May 2017. This set of lectures will teach how to probe documents beyond the obvious, find rich evidence in deeds, use an ancestors’ neighbors, prepare a Genealogical Proof Summary, and build a solid conclusion from disparate evidence.

Registration for live streaming will close at midnight, 10 May 2017, to watch the sessions in real time and as they happen. The Livestream special-value conference pricing will continue to be available for purchase until midnight, 14 May 2017, and will provide video streamed on-demand. After 14 May, the ten video sessions are available to order with the Video Pass package on the Conference Recordings page. All registrants of packages will receive an electronic version of the NGS 2017 Family History Conference Syllabus.

Instructions for viewing the live streaming will be sent to registrants on 9 May 2017.

March 11, 2017 Meeting: Behind the Brick Wall: Solving Research Problems with DNA Testing

Many genealogists are disappointed in the outcome when they throw money at testing companies without a concrete goal or question in mind. Successful testing begins with posing questions and then selecting the correct tests and testers to answer those questions. Learn how to set testing goals and how to navigate the testing and analysis processes.

Rachel Unkefer has been a genealogist for more than 30 years and a genetic genealogist for nearly 10 years. She has published several articles in “Avotaynu: The International Review of Jewish Genealogy” and has spoken on genetic genealogy at international genealogical conferences.

Meetings of the Central Virginia Genealogical Association are usually held on the second Saturday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church). Visitors to CVGA meetings are always welcome. The address of the LDS Church is 1275 Timberwood Blvd., Charlottesville, VA. It is located on the corner of Airport Road and Timberwood. Coming from U.S. 29, the entrance is on the right (north) side of Airport Road immediately before you reach the church. Spring 2017 Central Virginia Heritage Available!

Hi all — I was aiming at March 1st as the publication date for the Spring issue, but I managed to make it a Valentine’s Day baby instead!

First, a snippet from the article by Bernadette Whitsett-Hammond & Edwina St. Rose, titled Preserving the Daughters of Zion Cemetery in Charlottesville, VA.

The Daughters of Zion Cemetery, located near Oakwood Cemetery in Charlottesville, VA, was established in 1873 by members of the Daughters of Zion, a women’s benevolent organization that sought to support the needs of African Americans following Reconstruction. One of the important efforts conducted by the Daughters of Zion was to provide a place of dignified burial as an alternative to segregated cemeteries such as Oakwood Cemetery…
